Stephen O'Donnell grew up in Augusta and attended public and parochial schools there and graduated from Cony High School. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland and a Doctor of Laws (JD) degree from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.
Mr. O'Donnell has been in private practice in Maine since 1976 and started Goodspeed & O'Donnell with Ernest L. Goodspeed, Jr. in 1980. He has extensive legal experience in both State and Federal Courts.
At the present time, Mr. O'Donnell concentrates his practice on Social Security disability, estate planning, wills, probate, trusts and estates, real estate and business planning. In addition to drafting trusts, he serves as a trustee.
Mr. O'Donnell is a member of the Maine Trial Lawyers Association, Maine Bar Association, Kennebec Bar Association (Past President) and the National Organization of Social Security Claims Representatives (Sustaining Member). In 2013, Mr. O'Donnell was awarded a Certificate of Commendation under the Katahdin Counsel Recognition Program for his pro bono work. He has served on multiple committees for the Town of Monmouth, including the Comprehensive Planning Committee, Smart Growth Committee and Planning Board for which he currently serves as chairperson. He has served on the Board of Governors of the Augusta Country Club and is a Past President. He is the President of the Augusta Golf Company.
Joseph M. O'Donnell, was raised in Augusta and is a graduate of Cony High School. He was graduated (A.B.) from the College of the Holy Cross and spent his junior year abroad in Paris, France where he attended the Institute Science Politique. He did post graduate study in European History at Clark University, afterwards becoming a teacher of European History and Latin at Kents Hill School. He was drafted into the army during the Vietnam conflict and attended the Defense Language Institute. He held a top secret clearance, deployed in the Army Security Agency in Korea, and had a military occupation specialty as a Korean linguist.
After discharge from the Army, he studied law at Northeastern Law School in Boston and obtained a Doctor of Law degree (J.D.). He is admitted to practice in the federal and state courts of the State of Maine. He worked with Norman C. Bourget, Esq. in Bourget & O'Donnell for a time until he joined in partnership with Ernest L. Goodspeed, Esq. and Stephen O'Donnell, Esq. in the law partnership of Goodspeed & O'Donnell.
He is a member of the Maine State Bar Association, Kennebec Bar Association and the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys. He represents many people seeking debt relief as well as practicing in other areas of the law including real estate and family matters.
In 1980, he was appointed Public Administrator of Kennebec County by Governor Joseph Brennan and has been reappointed by every serving governor since his first appointment. The office requires knowledge of probate law, and Mr. O'Donnell has practiced extensively in Probate Court has helped numerous clients with Wills and Estates issues.
He is currently president of Howell House and past president of CODA Chorus and of the St. Leo's parish counsel. He serves on the advisory board of Kennebec Historical Society of which he is the current President. He served as Chair of the town of Monmouth Public Safety committee in an appointment made by the Select Board. He is a current member of the Select Board.
